#39 - Blog Review - Liam Gilliland - 1606003

I have decided to review a fellow student's blog in the hope that it will also help me improve my own blog. After reading through many of his individual blog posts it is clear that he has maintained a consistent structure throughout. This structure consists of  high levels of descriptive detail showing the reader exactly how he performed a certain task, supported by a very good number of screenshots, and then a short evaluation at the end.

The way Liam has separated his modelling processes into sections is very clear; the reader can see in the title exactly which part of the model is going to be described, and then it is, as promised. The descriptions Liam has written are very detailed, and they are clearly split up further between images so you can tell which image he is referring to. Another thing Liam has done which could benefit him greatly is at the beginning of the process he did lots of research about Star Wars, Maya 2017, and all the tools in Maya. This will have given him a head start in terms of understanding Maya and knowing which tool is the most effective to achieve a certain task.

One thing I think could be holding Liam's blog back a little bit is the lack of certain evaluative explanations in his blogs. I noticed a couple of them don't seem to have any evaluation at all, but on some of the ones that do, they can be quite short and often answer the same question. He could talk more about which tool he found the most useful for the process described in the blog post. He does have whole blog posts dedicated to the evaluation of each model, however these also do not talk about which tools he found useful. The question of what issues he had has been answered a lot, which is good, but he could be more diverse in which evaluative question he is answering.

Overall, I believe Liam's blog will do very well. If he adds in some extra evaluation he could really boost his marks, although what he has got should be enough to get a very high mark anyway.

This is the first post showing my progress on the second of my three assignment models, the Venator Class Star Destroyer. #13 - Assignment Models - Jedi Starfighter 2

To make it easier to get the exact shape of the Jedi star-fighter I imported a template image showing the top angle what it should look like. https://bj-o23.deviantart.com/art/Jedi-Starfighter-template-185786070 I scaled the image to cover eight units across and then pulled the front vertex on the model forward (to the left of the screen). As for the length of the model, I had some issues getting the vertices to move without pulling the rest of the model across, and it was distorting the symmetry. I spent some time trying to move them around until they matched, but when one side was fine, pulling a vertex on the other side would set it effectively set it back to square one. I finally realised the problem was that I was not using soft selection . I enabled this, then was able to pull a vertex without it pulling the other vertices down with it. #62 - Animation - Lighting

Once I had the movement done and I could see all for the individual frames rendered from the animation camera's panel (the one I will be rendering the final animation from), I realised that some parts of the animation were just not bright enough. The first area was the back of the Venator destroyer. You could see the glow of the engines just fine, but the actual model from the top was and underneath was almost invisible. To fix this, I added a directional light behind the Venator, pointing light directly at it, so when the animation renders you can actually see the colour of the ship now. I also added in a point light underneath the Invisible Hand where it is positioned during the Jedi Star Fighter sequence, because originally when it zoomed in on the star fighter you could barely see it.
